Weed Eater #517 "Needie" Line Trimmer for Sale. Made in Houston Texas (USA) in the late 70's with a rather heavy high-torque DC motor that produces 4.0 amps for a robust 16" cutting swath. Perfect working condition. A bit about the manufacture: George Ballas was an American entrepreneur, who invented the first string trimmer, known as the Weed Eater in 1971. After a garden worker was bitten by a poisonous snake (while trimming his lawn with shears), Ballas thought that there had to be a better way. The eureka moment came while observing the rotating brushes in an automatic car wash. Using a tin can laced with fishing line and an edge trimmer, he tried out his idea, which worked (sort of :). After some refinements, he shopped it around to several tool makers, who all rejected his invention. Undeterred, he went on to develop the garden tool himself. The first year, sales were over a half million dollars. By 1977 they were $80 million, and Ballas sold his company the following year to Emerson Electric Company.
